There is someone right here who knows you more than you do,
who is making room on the couch, who is fixing a meal, who is
putting on your favorite record, who is listening intently to what
you have to say, who is standing there with you: face to face,
hand to hand, eye to eye, mouth to mouth. There is no space
left uncovered. This is where you belong.
Sometimes, I don’t think we have a say in who we fall in love with.
Sometimes it happens because of the little things; like the way they fold their straw wrapper every time the two of you are out to eat or when you see them glance at you out of the corner of your eye, when they think you’re not looking. Sometimes it’s the way they circle their thumb around on the skin of your palm while the two of you are in the car together and sometimes it’s their laugh and the crinkles around their eyes when they smile.
I don’t think we have a say who we fall in love with. I think it just happens.
